Softly, Gently

[Dedicated to Tigger, who turned blind
from poisonous Chinese cat food
and also to Jim Ballerino, who used to fix everything
in my house.  He also gave Tigger to me.]

Softly, gently,
You came into my life.
Softly, gently,
You made my life right.
Like the sun on my skin,
A gentle summer breeze,
Softly, gently,
You adopted me.

Jimmy knew what he was doing
When he asked me to take you in.
He knew that once I saw you
I’d never send you away again.
That was years ago.
Jimmy’s now gone.
But the love affair he started
Is going on and on.

Softly, gently,
You came into my life.
Softly, gently,
You made my life right.
Like the sun on my skin,
A gentle summer breeze,
Softly, gently,
You chose me.

No one has more friends
Than those you made for me.
No one has more love
Than what you’ve been giving me.
No one has more laughter,
More joy, less care.
You bring me all of that
By simply being there.

Softly, gently,
You came into my life.
Softly, gently,
You made my life right.
Like the sun on my skin,
A gentle summer breeze.
Softly, gently,
You chose me.

Softly, gently
You adopted me.
