She Sees God

[For Sr. Mary Rose of Covenant House
played at her Retirement Party]

She sees God
In their faces,
She feels the universe
When she holds their hands.
She sees God
When she puts her arms around them.
No matter how it ends,
She's there for them.
She sees God.

She helps young runaways,
Her name is Mary Rose:
Her door is always open
For those who need her most.

She goes to find them in the streets,
She'll meet them at the bus
Before the street [pimps] can get to them
She'll gather the lost.

They come by the dozen,
They come one by one.
Knowing they'll find a bed
And something like a home.
They come for a night,
They come for a day,
For a week, for a month,
Knowing they can stay cause –

She sees God
In their faces,
She feels the universe
When she holds their hands.
She sees God
When she puts her arms around them.
No matter how it ends,
She's there for them.
She sees God.

One day a lady
Walked in with a beautiful child,
Handed her some money,
"I'll have more for you in a while.

Remember me, t'was Christmas,
I was pregnant in the street.
Here's now a little boy
I want you to meet.

He sees love
In everything.
It's because of you
We're now safe."

She sees God
In their faces,
She feels the universe
When she holds their hands.
She sees God
When she puts her arms around them.
No matter how it ends,
She's there for them.
She lights a candle,
She sees God.

She sees God.
