Raise Your Voice

[Pete Seeger was probably cleaning his desk
when he handed me the beginnings of this song.
About fifty years ago, someone unknown gave it to him to finish.
I eagerly completed it, and Pete corrected my version.]

Raise your voice, baby,
Raise your voice.
For the true and the right
Raise your voice.
Don’t you stay silent when
You have a choice.
Raise your voice, baby,
Raise your voice.

Baby sleep,
Grow big and strong,
Learn how to tell
The right from wrong.

Learn you can take
Most things in stride,
Learn, at times
You have to fight.

Raise your voice, then,
Raise your voice.
For the true and the right
Raise your voice.
Don’t you stay silent when
You have a choice.
Raise your voice, baby,
Raise your voice.

[as recorded:]
Schlafe ein, mein Kind,
schlaf’ ein,
lern’ ruhig und fleißig
zu sein.

Doch sei gewahr:
irgendwann
Gibt es Zeiten,
Wenn man nicht still sein kann.

Laß deine Stimme dann hör’n,
laß’ dich hör’n.
Ist die Wahrheit in Gefahr
laß’ deine Stimme hör’n.
Wenn uns Lügen
die Zukunft zerstör’n
sprich dich aus, mein Kind,
laß’ deine Stimme hör’n.

Sag deine Meinung
dann und wann.
Und du wirst sehn,
daß sich vieles ändern kann.

Laß deine Stimme hör’n,
laß’ dich hör’n.
Ist die Wahrheit in Gefahr
laß’ deine Stimme hör’n.
Wenn uns Lügen
die Zukunft zerstör’n
sprich dich aus, mein Kind,
laß’ deine Stimme hör’n.

[English lyrics – second verse and bridge – not recorded:]

May you sleep,
But not too long.
Too much in life
Can go too wrong.

And if the wrong
Is the bosses’ rule
Learn, they won’t teach that
In the bosses’ school.

Raise your voice, then,
Raise your voice.
For the true and the right
Raise your voice.
Don’t you stay silent.
You have a choice.
Raise your voice, baby,
Raise your voice.

Even when all your friends
Say you’re wrong,
Take a stand.
Be strong !

Raise your voice, baby,
Raise your voice.
For the true and the right
Raise your voice.
Don’t you stay silent.
You have a choice.
Raise your voice, baby,
Raise your voice.
